Beyond Inequality
Books, books, and books – battling the literacy gap!
Beyond Inequality's mission is to tackle socioeconomic disparities by bridging educational gaps, placing an emphasis on providing accessible educational resources to under-resourced children in Hong Kong. This will address the issue of literacy gaps and educational inequality.
Fact.
Only 6% of people from Hong Kong can speak English at a proficient/fluent level, indicating a profound literacy gap.
Fact.
Tuition fees can reach as high as HK$137,600 and are continuing to increase, making education at private/international schools increasingly inaccessible for many.
Fact.
Around 1 in 5 individuals in Hong Kong - at a population of around 1.65 million - live in poverty, presenting a significant wealth gap and poverty issue.
Our Project:
Beyond Inequality plans to host public book drives for under-resourced children. Our book drives will be open to public donations across the city, and we hope to collect a variety of second-hand books suitable to any audience. Collection boxes will be placed at the entranceways of schools, learning centers, charities, and stores. We hope to gather a public effort and will donate the books to local schools, learning centers, and charities. We hope our efforts increase the accessibility of English resources, ultimately helping to bridge Hong Kong's literacy gap and language barrier.
