Education without borders.
Access to quality education in Hong Kong.
38% of children admitted to youth homes run by HKSAS are there because of “study/schooling difficulties”. Without this help, their needs may not be met.
Almost half the population of Hong Kong reported that they cannot speak English. This means that they are at a huge disadvantage when searching for job opportunities.
English proficiency is a very important skill! Over 80% of higher-skilled workers in Hong Kong are able to read and write both English and Chinese.
Forward Initiative is here to support and guide underprivileged children in their English learning journeys. Every step of the way, we aim to help lay a better foundation for their academic advancement, allowing them the opportunity to go above and beyond, and take charge of their own futures. We aim to cultivate an appreciation for the performing arts, uncovering new and exciting ways to use English in their everyday lives.
Since the start of our project, we have gotten to know three young children living in a youth home in Shek Kip Mei. Through eight sessions over the course of two months, we have introduced them to new English words and phrases through fun and engaging songs. The new vocabulary is chosen through the lyrics of these songs, specifically suited to their level. We have developed games and activities to help them learn, and continue to try different approaches, aiming for the most effective ones. Through learning, singing, and laughing with them, we create a fun and supportive learning environment.
Furthermore, we aim to create a channel for young English speakers in Hong Kong, just like ourselves, to make a change. With each child we help, we strive to move a little closer to a world of kindness and understanding between everyone in our community, regardless of their differences.
As we see the children discover the world from different perspectives, we too are inspired by their curiosity and passion. One step at a time, anyone can make a change.
We are recruiting volunteers and ambassadors! With each new member, our impact grows. If you are interested in making a change in your community, message us on Instagram to become a volunteer.
